Lieutenant-Commander Herbert Inglis Nigel Lyon, R.N. (4 May, 1886 – 21 October, 1917) was an officer in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Born in Melcombe, Regis, the son of Commander H. Lyon, R.N..
Lyon was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 3 September, 1907.
Lyon was appointed to the light cruiser Glasgow on 17 September, 1912. He was in her at the Battle of the Falkland Islands and was mentioned in despatches for "carr[ying] out control well from secondary position as respective batteries came into action."
Lyon was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 3 September, 1915.
Lyon commanded the destroyer Nonsuch at the Battle of Jutland as part of the Twelfth Destroyer Flotilla.[1]
Lyon paid off Nonsuch on 2 March, 1917, but on the 21st, a Court Martial resulted in a reprimand for an earlier instance of grounding the destroyer.
Lyon was made captain of the destroyer Marmion in late May, 1917. He died when she was lost under his command on 21 October, 1917.[2][3]
