Commander (retired) Herbert Clarence Dains, (4 December, 1895 – 8 March, 1940) served in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

The son of H. H. Dains, Esq., and Analytical Chemist.

Dain's passed out of the Training Establishment on 1 May 1915 and was appointed to the battleship Bellerophon. He saw action in the ship at the Battle of Jutland. While still in the ship, Dains's application for service in submarines was noted on 28 June 1917, but he was instead appointed to the destroyer Harpy on the same day.[1]

On 14 September, 1917, Dains was appointed to the destroyer Chelmer. He remained in her through December, 1918.

Dains was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 March, 1919. In the immediate post-war years, he would serve in Colossus and Aurora before finally having his wish for submarine service granted by by an appointment to Dolphin for a submarine course on 21 August, 1920. In December, he would be appointed to the fleet submarine K 12.[2]

Dains served a half year in H 22, a year in H 28 and a year in K 6 before receiving his first command, the H 49 in late August, 1926.[3]

Dains was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 March, 1927.[4]

Following an accident aboard L 25 in which Dains had erred by letting an anchor go immediately after the starboard main motor failed on 28 July, 1930, Dains reverted to General Service.[5]

Dains was placed on the Retired List at his own request upon his relief on 25 October, 1932 and he was promoted to the rank of Commander on 4 December, 1935.[6]
