Lieutenant-Commander (retired) Herbert Alexander Child, C.M.G. R.N. (3 April, 1870 – 21 October, 1914) was an officer in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

The son of Reverend A. Child was born in Rotherfield.

Child was awarded the Ashanti Medal.

Child was promoted to the rank of Sub-Lieutenant on 14 July, 1889.

Child was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 14 July, 1891. On 17 March 1892, he was involved in an expeditionary force in Gambia.

He resigned the service on 15 February, 1894 to take up work with the Niger Coast [illeg]..

Child was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander (retired) on 14 July, 1899.

Child drowned at Duala[?], West Africa while engaged in a landing expeditionary force. He appears to have been working from the armoured cruiser H.M.S. Cumberland, though no appointment appears in his Service Record.
