Henry William Gregory
Lieutenant-Commander Henry William Gregory, R.N. (6 January, 1886 – 10 September, 1917) served in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Born in Callan, County Kilkenny, Gregory's father was H. C. Gregory, Magistrate.
Gregory was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 1 October, 1907. Gregory committed a "[b]reach of discipline in not possessing Ball Dress" in late 1908. Perhaps with this embarrassment in mind, Captain Shortland reocrded that Gregory was "wanting in zeal & alertness."
Gregory was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 1 October, 1915.
Appointed in command of the gunboat Hoverfly in November 1916, Gregory would serve in the inland waterways of Mesopotamia until September 1917, when he died in the British General Hospital of pneumonia, in Basra. This seems an odd climate in which to be stricken with pneumonia.
