Lieutenant-Commander Henry Thomas Gartside-Tipping, R.N. (11 June, 1848 – 25 September, 1915) served in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Born Henry Thomas Gartside Tipping at Dublin. His name is sometimes offered as "Tippinge", perhaps out of habit. His relationship to other men with that last name is worth exploring.

Tipping was appointed to the old screw frigate Doris on 16 November 1868, but was presently invalided from her "for preservation of life".

Tipping was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 18 August, 1870 but proved sickly. In 1871 this was declared to be heart disease, serious enough to keep him from manual labor.[1]

Tipping was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 18 August, 1878.[2] This is an unusually early date to see this rank used.

Tipping was placed on the Retired List on 16 July, 1884 owing to non-service.

Tipping hyphenated his last two names in March, 1892, becoming Gartside-Tipping.

Great War

Gartside-Tipping was appointed in command of the armed yacht Aries in September, 1914. In early 1915, he was put in command of the yacht Sanda and made senior officer in charge of Auxiliary Patrol Area XIX on the West Coast of Ireland. He remained in command of Sanda upon being superseded in command of Area XIX by Walter Pulteney Koe on 29 May, 1915. The yacht had moved to cover areas of the Belgian Coast by August.[3]

On 25 September, 1915 while Sanda was screening monitors which were bombarding shore positions, batteries at Blankenberghe responded and found Sanda as a suitable target. A shell of approximately 8-in struck her below the bridge and she was lost with thirteen officers and men, including Gartside-Tipping, who received a posthumous mention in despatches for his service off Belgium during August and September, gazetted 12 January, 1916: "In spite of his advanced age he rejoined and with undemonstrative patriotism served at sea as a Lieutenant-Commander."[4][5]
