Life & Career

The son of Major R. J. Hickman was born in Gibraltar, Monmouth[sic].

In 1895, it is recorded that he was afflicted with gonorrhea and that this complicated his taking part in a Pilotage examination.[1]

Hickman was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 June, 1898.[2]

Around 1902, Hickman was mentioned by Cdr. Hibbert of H.M.S. Fantome for his good work rendered in salving S.S. Holmled[?] off Port Ricla[?].[3]

In July 1908, Dampier recorded that Hickman was "at his best in an emergency."[4]

Hickman was promoted to the rank of Commander on 22 June, 1911.[5]

Hickman was appointed to the Benbow as gunnery officer on 20 June, 1914, and would serve in her until October 1916, seeing action at the Battle of Jutland. He was then sent to hospital to be be operated on for an inguinal hernia on his left side.[6]

Hickman was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1916. He was ordered to report to the Admiralty for a grounding of his command, H.M.S. Roxburgh in November 1917. He was cautioned to be more careful in future.[7]

Hickman was appointed in command of the light cruiser Undaunted on 3 January, 1918.[8]

He became ill and was removed from command, dying of pneumonia at the Naval Hospital in Leith before he was officially superseded in command of Undaunted.
