Rear-Admiral Henry Nelson Hippisley, (15 October, 1839 – 6 August, 1894) served in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Hippisley was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 26 November, 1859.[1]

Hippisley was promoted to the rank of Commander on 9 August, 1866.[2]

Hippisley was promoted to the rank of Captain on 9 August, 1877.[3]

Admiral Willes objected in October 1883 to Hippisley's re-appointment in command of Cleopatra in light of the captain's health issues, which in this case appeared to be related to gout. However, a lack of nerve and experience were also cited. Hippisley may have grounded his ship on 20 August 1884 and was indeed invalided from command due to gout and a final instance of "mania" in October, 1885. Although he was reported fit on 24 February, 1886, he would not be employed again.[4]

Hippisley was placed on the Retired List with the rank of Rear-Admiral on 20 February, 1892. He died in London in August of 1894.[5]
