Commodore (retired) Henry Morrell, (16 August, 1853 – 6 November, 1926) served in the United States Navy.

Life & Career

Morrell was born in New York and was appointed to the Naval Academy from the same state, graduating with the Class of 1873. He was commissioned Ensign on 16 July, 1874 and saw a normal early career pattern of sea and shore duty, receiving the usual promotions. He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant (Junior Grade) on 3 March, 1883, and to the rank of Lieutenant on 2 May, 1886.[1]

In 1893 he began a three-year tour at the New York Navy Yard, the first of several times he would be stationed here.[2] During the Spanish-American War, he served aboard gunboat Castine, eventually as Executive Officer.[3]

Morrell was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Commander on 3 March, 1899, and soon thereafter returned to the New York Navy Yard through 1901.[4] Following appointment as Executive Officer of monitor Puritan, he returned to the Navy Yard in 1903 to 1904, having been promoted to the rank of Commander on 7 November, 1902.[5][6]

Morrell's first command was of gunboat Marietta from 1904 to 1905. He then was appointed commanding officer of gunboat Wolverine, patrolling the Great Lakes from 1905 to 1907.[7][8][9]

Morrell was promoted to the rank of Captain on 1 July, 1907, shortly after returning once more to the New York Navy Yard, this time as Ordnance Officer.[10] In early 1908, he was ordered to assume command of battleship Wisconsin and was in command when the ship recommissioned in early April.[11][12]

He only remained in command a short time, as he was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 30 June, 1908. Under the terms of the Act of March 3, 1899 he was on the same date promoted to the rank of Commodore on the Retired List.[13][14]

Morrell was recalled to active duty in World War I, serving on General Court Martial Duty at, of course, the New York Navy Yard. Returned to inactive duty after the war, he died in New York in 1926.[15][16]
