Rear-Admiral Henry Montagu Doughty, C.B., Royal Navy (4 September, 1870 – 1 May, 1921) was an officer of the Royal Navy.
Contents
Life & Career
He was confirmed in the rank of Sub-Lieutenant dated 14 January, 1890.[1] He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant with seniority of 14 January, 1892.[2]
He was appointed to Jupiter as first Lieutenant and gunnery officer on 22 July, 1902, remaining in that post until 31 December, 1902 when he was promoted to the rank of Commander.[3][4] On 3 January, 1903, he was appointed to Empress of India for a stint that would last 18 months.[5]
On 30 June, 1908, Doughty was promoted to the rank of Captain.[6]
Doughty was appointed in command of Leviathan and as Flag Captain on 4 January, 1909.[7] He was appointed in command of the cruiser Niobe, and as Flag Captain, on 1 February, 1910.[8] On 12 April he was appointed in command of Sutlej as Flag Captain.[9]
On 18 June, 1910 his King Alfred collided with an S.S. Chesapeake. Doughty was to blame, and he was admonished to be more careful in future.[10]
He was appointed in command of Melpomene upon her recommissioning at Portsmouth on 16 January, 1912.[11]
In July 1913, he assumed command of the second class protected cruiser Hermione, remaining with her until some time in 1914.
Great War
He was again placed in command of Sutlej on 1 December, 1914.[12]
Doughty was appointed in command of Abercrombie to commission the ship on 12 May, 1915.[13]
On 10 January,m 1916, he was appointed in command of the Agincourt. He would command her at the Battle of Jutland, operating as part of the First Battle Squadron.
He also commissioned the new battleship H.M.S. Ramillies in April, 1917[14]
He was appointed command of the battleship Royal Sovereign in July, 1917.[15]

Flag Rank
He was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 1 November, 1919, vice Grant.[17]
