Rear Admiral Henry Joseph Ziegemeier (27 March, 1869 – 15 October, 1930) served in the United States Navy.

Life & Career

Henry J. Ziegemeier was born in Pennsylvania but was appointed to the Naval Academy from Ohio.{USOfficerReg1919|pp. 14-15}} Graduating with the class of 1890, he was promoted to the rank of Ensign on 1 July 1892.[1] He was further promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 3 March 1899,[2] and to the rank of Lieutenant Commander on 1 July, 1905.[3]

Ziegemeier was promoted to the rank of Commander on 4 March, 1911, just before the first of two non-consecutive tours as Secretary to the General Board, the first lasting into 1913,[4] and the second from October 1915 to mid-1917.[5]

In between these tours, he was appointed Commanding Officer of Annapolis in August 1913,[6] remaining in command through April 1914.[7] He also commanded Denver in late 1914 into 1915.[8]

Great War

Ziegemeier was promoted to the rank of Captain on 29 August, 1916. [9] In mid-1917 he became Commanding Officer of Virginia, remaining in command until 1919.[10]

Interwar Era

In August 1921, he became the first Commanding Officer of the battleship California,[11] and retained his command until August 1922.[12]

Ziegemeier was promoted to the rank of Rear Admiral on 3 June, 1922.[13] In June 1923 he was appointed as Commandant of Norfolk Navy Yard,[14] and in 1925 he assumed command of Battleship Division 3.[15] He served over two years in this position, not being relieved until around May, 1927.[16]

This proved to be his only opportunity to fly his flag afloat, as his last two assignments consisted of shore duty. In November 1927 he was appointed to command the Ninth Naval District and the Naval Training Center at Great Lakes, Illinois.[17] He remained here through May, 1928.[18]

Ziegemeier's final posting was as Commandant of the Thirteenth Naval District and the Puget Sound Navy Yard. He assumed command on 22 June, 1928.[19] While still serving in this post, he died of a heart attack while playing golf in Bremerton, Washington on 15 October, 1930.[20]
