Admiral SIR Henry Frederick Nicholson, K.C.B., Royal Navy (24 October, 1835 – 17 October, 1914) was an officer of the Royal Navy.

Early Life & Career

Nicholson was promoted to the rank of Commander on 11 April, 1866.[1]

On 15 September he was confirmed in the rank of Captain with seniority of 20 July.[2]

He was appointed an Ordinary Member of the Third Class, or Companion, in the Military Division of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath (C.B.) on 14 August.[3]

He was appointed Captain Superintendent of Sheerness Royal Dockyard on 17 July, 1885.[4]

Flag Rank

Nicholson was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 22 June, 1886, vice Hickley.[5]

Nicholson was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on 25 February, 1892, vice Watson.[6]

Their Lordships' "severest condemnation" was expressed following a speech Nicholson gave at the Spectaclemakers' Company dinner on 23 January, 1893, concerning the second court-martial relating to the grounding of Howe.[7]

In the Queen's Diamond Jubilee honours, Nicholson was appointed an Additional Member of the Second Class, or Knight Commander, in the Military Division of the Order of the Bath (K.C.B.) on 22 June, 1897.[8] He was promoted to the rank of Admiral on 16 September vice Baird.[9] In accordance with the provisions of the Order in Council of 22 February, 1870, he was placed on the Retired List on 11 December, at his own request.[10]
