Henry Evelyn Charles Blagrove (26 April, 1887 – 14 October, 1939) was an officer of the Royal Navy during the First World War.

Life & Career

Henry Blagrove was born in Barton Fields, Canterbury, son of Colonel Blagrove, C.B..[1]

Blagrove was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 June, 1909.[2]

Appointed to Tiger on 22 August, 1914, Blagrove would serve as Officer of the Turret in "B" turret through much of the war, including the Battle of Jutland.

Blagrove was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 30 June, 1917 and appointed to Queen Elizabeth from Tiger on 24 November. He would finished out the wear there.[3]

Post-War

Blagrove was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1919.[4]

On 20 January 1923, he was appointed to the light cruiser Cardiff, probably as executive officer. He enjoyed a stint during this appointment as acting Captain of Ceres, but the record is not altogether crystalline. Upon being relieved in Cardiff on 20 February, 1925, he sought passage on S.S. Vienna to make his return to England.[5]

Blagrove was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1927.[6]

In January 1929, he was appointed in command of the light cruiser Cardiff.[7]

He was appointed in command of the cruiser Norfolk on her recommissioning. He was superseded in her in January, 1935.[8]

Blagrove was blamed for grounding Sussex and damaging her propellers.[9]

Blagrove was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 10 January, 1939.[10]

World War II

Blagrove died when Royal Oak was torpedoed and sunk in Scapa Flow on 14 October, 1939.[11]
