Revision as of 11:03, 16 October 2017

Captain (retired) Henry Cyril Royds Brocklebank, C.B.E. (22 January, 1874 – ) served in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Brocklebank was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 31 December, 1895.[1]

Brocklebank was appointed to the Albemarle on 12 November 1903 after a dizzying sequence of torpedo boat destroyer commands. He would be re-appointed as her first lieutenant on 30 January, 1906. Brocklebank left Albemarle when he was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1906.[2]

Brocklebank was appointed in command of the armed merchant cruiser Changuinola on 23 November 1914. He would command the vessel through most of the war.[3]

Brocklebank demonstrated good seamanship when he assisted a Norwegian ship in a gale on 18 September, 1916. He was promoted to the rank of Acting Captain on 26 September, 1916.[4]

Brocklebank left Changuinola when he was superseded on 7 August, 1917. He reported to the Admiralty and was sent to hospital where he was found unfit for undisclosed reasons. On 30 October, he was found fit for shore service. On 30 January, 1918, he reported that he was "now quite fit for duty" and was appointed to be the Royal Navy Naval Attaché at the Hague. He returned to England on 27 August 1918 on private affairs. He apparently kept at the diplomatic work, however, until he ceased being attaché on 31 August, 1919.[5]

Post-War

Brocklebank was placed on the Retired List at his own request with the rank of Captain on 8 March, 1920.[6]
