Ordered: December, 1916[3]
Launched: 2 Nov, 1917[4]

H.M.S. Watchman was one of twenty-one "W" class destroyers completed for the Royal Navy in 1917-18.

Service

Watchman joined the Eleventh Destroyer Flotilla in February, 1918[7] and and remained with that formation until it was disbanded in March, 1919, at which point she was allocated along with the Eleventh's other "V"s and "W"s to the newly-fashioned First Destroyer Flotilla.[8]

She re-commissioned at Devonport on 9 December, 1920.[9]

She was re-commissioned at Devonport on 3 May, 1923 to serve with the First Destroyer Flotilla as part of the Atlantic Fleet.[10]

Commissioned under command of Eric Paul Vivian on 11 November, 1926 to serve with the Fifth Destroyer Flotilla as part of the Atlantic Fleet.[11]

Watchman was re-commissioned on 4 September, 1928 for service with the Fifth Destroyer Flotilla as part of the Atlantic Fleet.[12]

She was re-commissioned at Devonport on 11 November, 1930 and returned to work with 5 D.F..[13] She remained with them into at least mid-1934 after that formation became attached to Home Fleet, re-commissioning on 11 January, 1933 under the command of Lt. Cdr. John Stuart Crawford.[14]

In 1934, her bell was offered for sale to naval officers and others who might be interested, at the price of £5 or perhaps £1. Interested parties were to write the Director of Stores and were urged to include any special information which might convey the importance they attach to the bell, in light of the Admiralty's understanding that such items carry great sentimental value.[15]

The ship was reduced to Reserve at Devonport on 1 December, 1934.[16]
