H.M.S. Vixen (1865)
Builder: Lungley, Deptford[1]
Laid down: 1864[2]
Launched: 18 Nov, 1865[3]
Commissioned: 1 October, 1866[4]
Broken up: 1896[5]
H.M.S. Vixen was one of three Vixen Class armoured gunboats completed for the Royal Navy.

Service

Vixen was commissioned on 1 October 1866. On 15 November she took on powder at the Royal Arsenal at Woolwich, consisting of 70 cases of 1.25 cwt each. On 16 November, she received a final inspection from Commodore Edmonstone, Superintendent of Woolwich Dockyard.[6]

Vixen was taken out of commission on 25 January 1867 after encountering a severe squall on 1-2 January which was getting the best of her while en route from Falmouth to Queenstown. She lost two of her five boats, and had a third stove in. All forward hatches had to be closed and the men in the stokehole were up to their ankles in water when the aft hatches were occasionally opened to provide ventilation. There was serious concern that the ship would not possess the seakeeping qualities expected of her.[7][8]

In summer 18678, she participated in the naval review at Spithead.[9]

From 1869 through 1892, the Navy List shows her at Bermuda, but with no officers assigned to her.

Captains

The Navy List never shows any officers assigned to between 1869 and 1892.
