H.M.S. Tartar was one of eight Archer Class torpedo cruisers completed for the Royal Navy.

Service

She and Porpoise were delivered to the dockyard authorities at Sheerness upon their arrival from Glasgow on 4 December, 1886 to be completed for seagoing service.[6]

Though intended in the long term to provide foreign service, she was first commissioned for service in the Annual Manoeuvres of 1888, on 4 July, 1888.

The ship was commissioned at Sheerness on 30 June, 1891.[7]

She was one of twelve obsolete vessels sold at auction at Chatham Dockyard on 3 April, 1906. She fetched £5,450.[8]
