H.M.S. Spenser was one of five flotilla leaders of the Shakespeare class.

Service

Spenser commissioned on 1 December, 1917,[5] becoming the flagship of the Tenth Destroyer Flotilla.[6]

She would remain there until March 1919, when she was placed in the retooled Second Destroyer Flotilla.[7]

The ship was re-commissioned at Portsmouth on 15 September, 1924. By March 1925 she was with Third Destroyer Flotilla in the Mediterranean, bearing Captain (D) Charles G. Ramsey.[8]

On 6 June, 1925, she re-commissioned at Portsmouth.[9]

She paid off on 1 July 1928 to the Maintenance Reserve at Rosyth.[10]

Equipment

In 1919, she was selected to receive one of the first five Renouf Torpedo Tactical Instrument Type As.[11]
