H.M.S. Sappho was one of six Fantome Class composite screw sloops completed for the Royal Navy.

Service

Commissioned at Sheerness on 16 August, 1881. She served in the Pacific before being ordered home in summer of 1885.[5]

By November, 1886, she was identified as one of forty-one vessels of various types the Navy had decided to dispose of due to their lack of practical value in the event of war.[6]
