Russell was launched at Jarrow-on-Tyne on 19 February, 1901, by Mrs. McLaren, wife of Charles McLaren, chairman of the Palmer Shipbuilding and Iron Company.[10]

Russell commissioned at Chatham on 19 February, 1903, under Captain Alfred L. Winsloe, to relieve the Canopus in the Mediterranean.[11]

She recommissioned at Sheerness on 13 August, 1912.[12] She received a refit at Gibraltar and then proceeded to The Nore, arriving on 10 January, 1913. Once there, the crew received twenty days combined Christmas and refitting leave.[13]

Russell served in the Fourth Battle Squadron in 1913.[14] At the end of the year, she was serving as flagship to Rear-Admiral in the Home Fleets at the Nore.[15]

Russell served in the Great War under the exclusive command of Captain William Bowden-Smith until she was sunk by a minefield laid by U 73 off Malta in April, 1916. The sweeping sloop Nasturtium and the hired yacht Aegusa would be sunk by the same minefield later in the same day.[16]
