Russell commissioned at Chatham on 19 February, 1903, under Captain Alfred L. Winsloe, to relieve the Canopus in the Mediterranean.[11]

She recommissioned at Sheerness on 13 August, 1912.[12]

Russell served in the Fourth Battle Squadron in 1913.[13] At the end of the year, she was serving as flagship to Rear-Admiral in the Home Fleets at the Nore.[14]

Russell was sunk by a minefield laid by U 73 off Malta. The sweeping sloop Nasturtium and the hired yacht Aegusa would be sunk by the same minefield later in the same day.[15]
