H.M.S. R 4 (1918)
Pendant Number: R.4[1]
Builder: Chatham Royal Dockyard[2]
Ordered: October, 1917[3]
Launched: 8 Jun, 1918[4]
Sold: May, 1934[5]
H.M.S. R 4 was one of ten "R" class submarines built for the Royal Navy.

Service

From at least mid-1927[6] to at least early 1929, she was part of the Sixth Submarine Flotilla, tender to Vulcan.[7]

In early 1933, she is the only boat in her class in the Navy List, and listed as having been "reduced to immediate Reserve at Gosport" and part of the Fifth Submarine Flotilla on 22 July, 1932.[8]

In 1934, her bell, inscribed with her name and perhaps a motto, was offered for sale to naval officers and others who might be interested, at a price between £1 and £5. Interested parties were to write the Director of Stores and were urged to include any special information which might convey the importance they attach to the bell, in light of the Admiralty's understanding that such items carry great sentimental value.[9]
