H.M.S. Jupiter was a battleship of the Majestic class, launched in 1895, and sold for scrap in 1920. She was the fourth warship to bear the name of the king of the Gods of Roman mythology.

Service

Jupiter commissioned at Chatham on 8 June, 1897, Captain Angus MacLeod in command.[7]

She recommissioned at Devonport on 23 December, 1913.[8]

In mid-July, 1914, the ship was ordered to take up station in the Humber as part of a force of four Majestic class battleships and two Cressy class cruisers being sent there to be demobilised on the 25th. Her crew was to be transferred to Canopus.[9]

Jupiter paid off on 22 December, 1916.[10]

Radio

By the end of 1901, she was fitted or due to receive a "1 to 52" W/T set.[11]

Torpedoes

In 1904, in a competition to investigate how rapidly submerged tubes could be fired four times sequentially, starting with the tube loaded and the bar out, the ship's crew was able to do this in 5 minutes, 50 seconds. The best time was achieved by Cressy at 50.75 seconds, though 2:30 was more typical.[12]
