H.M.S. Handy was one of thirty-six 27 Knotters, a broad meta-class of early Torpedo Boat Destroyers built for the Royal Navy in the 1890s.
Service
Handy arrived at Singapore in early December, 1896 in company with Centurion, the T.B.Ds. Alacrity and Hart and the torpedo cruiser Porpoise.[7] By the nineteenth, the ships had moved on for Hong Kong, less Alacrity.[8]
In July, 1904, complaints from Vice-Admiral Noel of the China Station about the condition of his T.B.s and T.B.D.s prompted a review of his assets by First Lord of the Admiralty Selborne. Within, it was noted that Handy's boilers were being re-tubed and her hull and machinery refitted, work to be completed on 23 July.[9]
Handy was one of seventeen destroyers of the Reserve Division which left Sheerness on 1 July, 1905 for Spithead under the overall command of Commander R. G. Gregory in H.M.S. Spitfire.[10]
