H.M.S. Forte (1893)
Builder: Chatham Royal Dockyard[1]
Ordered: Naval Defence Act of 1889[2]
Launched: 9 Dec, 1893[3]
Commissioned: 5 Nov, 1895[4]
Sold: 2 Apr, 1914[5]
Fate: Scrapped

H.M.S. Forte was one of eight Astræa class cruisers completed for the Royal Navy between 1894 and 1896.

Service

Forte commissioned at Chatham on 20 April, 1899 under the command of Captain Edward Pitcairn Jones with a complement of 318 in order to relieve the second class protected cruiser Fox under Captain Frank Hannam Henderson on the Cape of Good Hope Station.[6]

Near the end of 1908, Forte delivered such a terrible result in a gunlayer's test that a Court of Inquiry was convened, leading to the determination that Captain Green and his officers had failed to provide sufficient training, as they had not appreciated the difficulty of the test procedure. Worse was to follow – in 1910 the cruiser ran aground and Their Lordships expressed "severe displeasure [with Green] for failure to comply with K. R. & for unseamanlike manner in which H. M. ship was navigated."[7]

Forte was sold on 2 April, 1914.[8]
