H.M.S. Encounter spent her first six years in Royal Navy service in the Australia Station before being transferred to the Royal Australian Navy as H.M.A.S. Encounter on 1 July, 1912.[7]

She was the first ship in the fledgling navy to fire in anger when she bombarded Toma Ridge on 14 September, 1914..
