Construction

Empress of India was launched at 16:30 on 7 May, 1891, by Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Connaught.[8]

Service

On 12 December, 1895, the majority of her crew turned over to the new battleship Magnificent at Chatham.[9]

Radio

As of 1901, while serving as a Port Guard ship,. she was slated to receive a "1 to 52" W/T set.[10] In his memoirs, Captain Henry L. Fleet relates:

On the conclusion of this trip [to the Channel Islands in January, 1902] we went to Portsmouth to have the wireless installed. It was estimated that it would take several weeks, and the Admiral became unhappy at the idea of being deprived of his flagship.[11]
