Service
Newly completed, on 11 December 1866 Daphne was placed in the Keyham Steamyard.[4]
She tested her new engines off the Plymouth Breakwater on 17 April, 1867 under the supervision of Captain George Ommanney Willes, the sloop being navigated by a Mr. Edmund Swain.[5]
During a practice off the Isle of Wight for the upcoming Naval Review in mid-July 1867, Daphne assumed her place in the Starboard Division of the Ironclad Line and puzzled onlookers in response to a signaled manoevres finding her place in the line ahead of the Valiant only after "sundry and inexplicable manoeuvres".[6]
Daphne was commissioned at Devonport by Commander Richard Adams on 12 October, 1871.[7]
