H.M.S. Chamois (1896)
Builder: Palmer Shipbuilding and Iron Company[1]
Ordered: 1895-96 Programme[2]
Laid down: 28 May, 1896[3]
Launched: 9 Nov, 1896[4]
Commissioned: Nov, 1897[5]
Foundered: 26 Sep, 1904[6]

H.M.S. Chamois was one of forty "C" class destroyers built for the Royal Navy — a "30 knotter".

She foundered before the war.

Service

Chamois was lost after she experienced flooding following a full-power trial in the Gulf of Patras, near Greece. Kangaroo and Exe came alongside her on both sides to try to sling her, but bulkhead collapses caused progressive flooding. The ship was lost; divers discovered that a propeller and shaft had failed and pierced the hull. One of two stokers burned by a steam escape later died of his injuries.[7]
