Admiral Sir Guy R. A. Gaunt.

Admiral SIR Guy Reginald Archer Gaunt, K.C.M.G., C.B., Royal Navy, Retired (25 May, 1869 – 18 May, 1953) was an officer of the Royal Navy during the First World War.

Life & Career

Gaunt was specially promoted from the Supplementary List of Lieutenants to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1901, for services in Samoa.[1]

Gaunt married Margaret Elizabeth Worthington at Hong Kong Cathedral on 23 November, 1904.[2]

Captain

Gaunt was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1907.[3]

On 9 January, 1908, he was appointed in command of the battleship Majestic.[4]

Gaunt was appointed Captain of Andromeda on 29 January, 1909 for "Trooping".[5]

Gaunt assumed command of the first class protected cruiser Niobe in November 1909.

On 15 February, 1910, he was appointed in command of the cruiser Challenger.[6] She was then part of the Australia Squadron, and under his command made her way across the Pacific to western Mexico, where she called at Acapulco in June 1911.[7]

On 12 September, 1912, he was given command of the super-dreadnought Thunderer.[8]

Gaunt was again appointed in command of Majestic on 16 October, 1912.[9]

On 1 June, 1914, Gaunt was appointed Naval Attaché at Washington, D.C..[10]

Great War

Following the outbreak of war in August, 1914, Gaunt remained in Washington, D.C. He was appointed an Additional Member of the Third Class, or Companion, of the Most Distinguished Order of Saint Michael and Saint George (C.M.G.) on 1 January, 1916.[11] On 22 March, 1917, he was appointed Naval Liason Officer at Washington with the rank of Commodore, First Class.[12]
