Guy D'Oyly-Hughes
Captain Guy D'Oyly-Hughes, D.S.O., D.S.C., Royal Navy (1 August, 1891 – 8 June, 1940) was an officer in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
D'Oyly-Hughes was promoted to Sub-Lieutenant on 30 June, 1912.[1]
D'Oyly-Hughes was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 September, 1913.[2]
From November 1914 to April 1916, he served in submarine E 11. In this appointment, in 1915 he was awarded the Royal Humane Society Silver Medal for saving life at sea. Until 14 February, 1917, he served in the submarine J 4.
Still a Lieutenant, he was in command of the submarine E 35 on 11 May, 1918 when she sank Template:DE-U154 with a pair of torpedoes at 36deg 45' N., 12deg 0' W..[3]
On 13 November 1925, D'Oyly-Hughes was appointed to the submarine O 1, which would be renamed Oberon before launch, while she was building.[4]
World War II
D'Oyly-Hughes was killed when his aircraft carrier H.M.S. Glorious was sunk by gunfire under controversial circumstances of readiness as it was headed to Britain from the Norwegian coast.
