Captain Gregory Gonville Cuff Wood-Martin (2 April, 1878 – 30 October, 1934) was an officer of the Royal Navy during the First World War.
Life & Career
Wood-Martin was born in Woodville, Sligo, the son of Colonel W. P. Wood-Martin.[1]
Wood-Martin was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 31 December, 1899.[2]
He was appointed to Vernon to qualify as in torpedoes on 30 September, 1901. He made Lieutenant (T) in June, 1902.[3]
Wood-Martin was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1911.[4]
Wood-Martin was appointed as torpedo officer in Shannon of the Fifth Cruiser Squadron on 10 March, 1908. He was superseded on 2 January, 1912.[5]
He was next appointed in command of the destroyer Spiteful on 23 March, 1912.[6]
In August, 1913, he was appointed as executive officer in Natal.[7] He would remain there until July, 1914 when he was sent to Vernon for experimental work.[8]
Great War
Wood-Martin was appointed to Superb as executive officer on 19 October, 1914.[9]
Wood-Martin was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1917, he was superseded in Superb on 26 July and sent, presently, to the Admiralty to work under the Director of Torpedoes and Mining.[10]
He left the D.T.M. and was appointed in command of H.M.S. Blonde on 30 December, 1917, remaining in her through the end of the war.[11]
Post-War
On 11 January 1919 he left Blonde and was appointed in command of the light cruiser Penelope.[12][13]
On 4 April 1921, he was appointed in command of the light cruiser Champion, remaining there for thirteen months, less 17 days leave from 20 December, 1921.[14]
He was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 6 July, 1922.[15]
