Rear-Admiral George Arthur Scott, D.S.C., R.N. (5 September, 1888 – ) was an officer in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Scott was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 1 October, 1910.[1]

On 9 February, 1914 while studying at Osborne College, Scott was admitted to Haslar Hospital for an injured knee. He returned to service on 6 March.[2]

Great War

Scott was to be appointed to Collingwood on 1 August, but this was cancelled and a week later he was appointed to the submarine Severn. He was invalided from her at Simonstown on 8 September, 1915 with further knee problems. This was now labelled a "derangement" of the knee and he was not fit until 8 December when he was appointed to Tyne for command of the "C" Class destroyer Bat.[3]

On 2 April, 1916, he was appointed from Bat to assume command of the River Class destroyer Arun.[4]

On 3 July, 1918, he applied for consideration for command of a destroyer working with the Grand Fleet. In 1918, his Mons damaged the steamer S.S. Minnedosa and Scott was faulted to going too fast when a tug might have been necessary to assist in turning.[5]

Scott's desired for Grand Fleet work was satisfied when he was appointed in command of the destroyer Urchin, a unit of the Thirteenth Destroyer Flotilla on 22 August, 1918.[6]

Scott was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 1 October, 1918.[7][8]

Post-War

Though Scott was only briefly in command of H.M.S. Starfish, he was blamed for damaging Lydiard when Starfish collided with her on 17 October, 1919.[9]

Scott was appointed in command of the destroyer Rival on 18 November, 1919.[10]

On 1 January, 1921, Scott was appointed in command of the destroyer Stormcloud.[11]

Scott was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1923.[12]

A Court of Enquiry into a collision between Watchman and Velox on 17 September, 1929 found that he was slightly to blame for not signaling "stop engines" in the incident.[13]

Scott was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1931.[14]

He was in command of at least one vessel after 1931, but editors should note that his ADM 196/51 Service Record's page is torn and another should be consulted for this information.

He was appointed to the light cruiser Belfast on 24 April, 1939, to take command upon her commissioning for trials. Diagnosed with "nervous dyspepsia" on 15 January, 1940, Scott left Belfast on 29 January for duty outside the Admiralty not exceeding six months.[15]

In 1939 or 1940, Scott incurred the "severe displeasure" of the Admiralty for having a naval photograph printed in the Times.[16]

World War II

Scott was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 8 July, 1941 and placed on the Retired List the following day.[17]
