Frederick Philip Champion de Crespigny
Commander (retired) SIR Frederick Philip Champion de Crespigny, Seventh Baronet, R.N. (30 December, 1884 – 12 August, 1947) was an officer in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Born in Lyburn, Hants, Champion de Crespigny gained two and a half months' time on passing out of Britannia in September 1901, joining Repulse in the Channel Squadron.
On 22 October, 1906, Champion de Crespigny was appointed in command of the first-class torpedo boat T.B. 066.[1][2]
Champion de Crespigny was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 1 April, 1907.[3]
On 17 June 1913, he was appointed to Skirmisher as first and gunnery officer on commissioning.
Champion de Crespigny was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 1 April, 1915.[4]
On 19 December, 1916, Champion de Crespigny left Skirmisher to take up command of Sheldrake. He served in this capacity through the end of the war.
Champion de Crespigny was appointed in command of the destroyer Sheldrake on 19 December, 1916.[5] Champion de Crespigny would be mentioned in despatches for his services in the Adriatic in the latter half of 1919, gazetted 22 April, 1919.[6]
Post-War
In April, 1919, Champion de Crespigny was still in command of Skirmisher and took on the additional burden of command of a group of T.B.Ds.. On 20 June, he was evaluated for deafness, which was found to be attributable to a nervous condition. He was found fit in July and placed on half pay. Champion de Crespigny was placed on the Retired List with a gratuity on 19 April, 1920 and subsequently promoted to the rank of Commander on the Retired List on 30 December, 1924.[7]
On 13 August 1927, Champion de Crespigny became Seventh Baronet.[8]
World War II
On 22 August 1939, Champion de Crespigny was made Consular Shipping Adviser, N.C.S. Duties, Trondheim. In 1940 while still in Trondheim, Champion de Crespigny lost some confidential books.
On 23 March 1942, Champion de Crespigny was appointed Naval Chief Staff Officer, Harwich, vice Ritchie.
On 2 August, 1945, Champion de Crespigny was declared unfit for naval service due to sclerosis.
