Rear-Admiral Frederic Cyril Bradley (20 September, 1888 – ) served in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Bradley was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 1 April, 1901.[1]
At the outbreak of war, Bradley was appointed to Legion as first lieutenant. He was superseded in her on 25 October, 1914, as he had been sent ashore suffering from pleurisy on 25 September. Found fit on 2 November, on the 10th, Bradley was appointed to Matchless, to become first lieuteannt upon her commissioning.[2]
On 8 September 1915, he was appointed from Matchless for command of T.B. 23. On 15 February 1916, Bradley rendered valuable services in assisting a mined Dutch vessel.[3]
On 14 March 1917, he was appointed from T.B. 23 to command Unity.
On 19 February, 1918, Bradley was appointed from Unity to command the "R" Class destroyer Trenchant. This lasted just nine days, however, before he was appointed in command of Rocket.
Bradley was hospitalised, suffering from hemorrhoids, in early November, 1918. He was sent to Haslar later in the month.
Post-War
On 10 December, 1918 Bradley was ordered to leave Rocket. On 21 December, he began 1 year-long appointment in Vernon in the Paravane Department, and was found fit on 23 December. He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 1 April, 1919.[4]
Bradley was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1923. His service in the 1920s was typical for those of war-time destroyer commanders, filled with miscellaneous appointments in command of destroyers, and three years on loan to the New Zealand DIvision, Decembers 1925 – 1928.[5]
Bradley was superseded in command of Wessex on 30 December and promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1930.[6]
Bradley was loaned to the Royal Australian Navy on 7 August, 1931. His time under their auspices included a stint in command of the heavy cruiser Canberra before he reverted to the Royal Navy on 21 August, 1934.[7]
World War II
Bradley was deemed unfit for sea service in September 1939 owing to defective vision, this ruling effectively ending his captaincy of the modern light cruiser Edinburgh. Restricted to shore duties, Bradley suffered from cellulitis on his backside and varicose veins. He was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 15 January, 1941 and reverted to the Retired List on 19 March, 1947.[8]
