Vice-Admiral (retired) Frederic Aubrey Whitehead, C.B. (29 August, 1874 – 30 April, 1958) was an officer in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Whitehead was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 14 April, 1894.[1]

Whitehead was appointed to the battleship Hannibal in the Channel Fleet on 26 October, 1903 and promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1904. He took command of the old destroyer Hero for the annual manoeuvres on 14 July. He was thanked that same year for taking the trouble to arrange the fitting of gunsights for 12-pdr 8cwt atop turrets, though it is not clear if this pertains to Hannibal or Hero.[2]

Whitehead was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1910.[3]

He was appointed in command of the destroyer Grafton on 2 March, 1912.[4]

Whitehead was appointed in command of Duncan on 7 November, 1913.[5]

Great War

Whitehead was appointed in command of the battleship Magnificent on 1 August, 1914.[6]

He assumed command of the first class protected cruiser Royal Arthur in February 1915.

Whitehead was appointed to command the armoured cruiser Roxburgh in December 1915, remaining there until September 1917.

Whitehead was appointed Director of Mercantile Movements on 10 September, 1917.[7]

Post-War

He was appointed command of the battleship Royal Oak on 19 January, 1919.[8]

Whitehead was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 16 May, 1921.[9]

Whitehead was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 2 August, 1923.[10]

Whitehead was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on 8 July, 1926.[11]
