Life & Career

Pattinson earned second class torpedo and gunnery certificates in 1906 and completed twelve months training on 4 May 1907. He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant R.N.R. on 16 June, 1908.[1]

In civil service, Pattinson worked in 1909 through 1913 for the New Zealand Shipping Company in the Kaipara progressing from Fourth through First Mate, and then in 1914 in Whakatane as First Mate.

In July of 1915, Pattinson was put in command of Velox. He received an expression of Admiralty appreciation for his conduct in command on 25 October, 1915.[2]

Pattinson received an expression of Their Lordships appreciation by "rendering gallant & prompt assistance" in rescuing men from the mined armed boarding steamer Fauvette on 9 March, 1916. Pattinson was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander with a date of seniority of 16 June, 1916. Philip Agnew Bateman-Champain thought Pattinson "a zealous and capable destroyer officer inclined to be a little casual as regards his duty as Cap. when in harbour."[3]

Pattinson was appointed in command of Rock Sand on 25 July, 1918.[4]

Pattinson was appointed in command of the first-class torpedo boat T.B. 041 on 19 October, 1918.[5]

In December, 1918 Pattinson became Chief Officer in the civil ship Shropshire of 12,184 gross tonnage, leaving her in late April, 1920. In October he started service as Master of Sussex for a little less than one year.
