Commander (retired) Frank Louis Merriman, (20 October, 1896 – 29 August, 1944) served in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

The son of Chiswick engineer W. H. Merriman.

Merriman joined the navy as part of a special emergency term taken into the Training Establishment in September 1914.

He emerged in March 1915 and served in Warspite until being appointed to a one-week Torpedo Control Course at Vernon on 23 April 1917.

On 2 May 1917 he was placed in the destroyer Acasta. In January or April 1918 he was moved to Viceroy, and on 5 August 1918 to Ursula, being promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 August, 1918.

A March 1921 evaluation from Captain Sommerville noted that Merriman was "musical." In December, Cdr. Cantlie said Merriman "suffers from slight [illegible .. nasal? moral?] defect."

Merriman was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 August, 1926.

World War II

Merriman was promoted to the rank of Commander on 20 October, 1941.

Involved in convoy action in the Mediterranean.

Admitted to Malta Hospital on 2 July, 1944 in grave condition owing to an ulcerated rectum. His status reports from here were only dire, and he died at the end of August.
