Commander Frank Adam Conyers Baker, O.B.E. (6 December, 1889 – ) was an officer in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Baker gained two and a half months' time on passing out of Britannia and proceeding to an appointment to Argyll on 15 September, 1906.[1]

In February, 1912, Baker received an Italian Medal and Diploma for his services in the aftermath of DEcember 1908's earthquake at Messina.

Baker was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 1 October, 1912.[2]

Baker was appointed to the armoured cruiser King Alfred on 29 July, 1914. He left her when she paid off on 16 October, and he received an appointment to become first lieutenant in Legion on 25 October, 1914.

On 14 November, 1915 Baker was appointed to command Griffon.

On 6 September 1916, Griffon collided with a drifter. Baker was told to exercise more care in future.[3]

On 12 October, 1916 Baker was superseded in Griffon and ordered to report to the Admiralty. On 11 November 1916 he received a temporary appointment in command of Syren. On 28 November, this ended with a brief appointment in command of the destroyer Lurcher. Superseded on 10 December, Baker was again directed to report to the Admiralty.[4]

On 4 January, 1917, Baker was appointed in command of the Acheron Class destroyer Tigress.[5]

On 9 August, 1917, Baker attacked an enemy submarine while on escort duty. His good judgment in the attack elicited praise from the Admiralty.

Baker left Tigress after being appointed in command of the destroyer Loyal on 5 November, 1917.[6]

On 20 March 1918, he again attacked an enemy submarine which "probably resulted in serious damage."

Post-War

Baker left command of Loyal when he was appointed in command of the first-class torpedo boat T.B. 116 on 3 February, 1919.[7]

Baker was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 1 October, 1920.[8]

In May 1921, Baker underwent a short P & R/T course. On 1 September, this grew into an appointment on the staff of Portsmouth's P & R/T School. The mid 1920s grew into a string of appointments providing physical training in Warspite as well as at shore facilities.

Baker was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1926.[9]

Baker suffered an inguinal hernia on the right side which required his hospitalisation at Haslar on 4 April, 1935. He busied himself coordinating a Combined Services Football Tour of South Africa and then returned to the Portsmouth physical training school. He was not found fit before 30 December, 1935.[10]

Baker was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 22 June, 1936.
