Francis Powell

Admiral SIR Francis Powell, K.C.M.G., C.B., Royal Navy, Retired (15 September, 1849 – 5 October, 1927) was an officer of the Royal Navy.

Early Life & Career

In accordance with the provisions of the Order in Council of 5 February, 1872, Powell was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant with seniority of 6 February of that year.[1]

Powell was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1889.[2]

In recognition of his services in Benin he was appointed an Ordinary Member of the Third Class, or Companion, in the Military Division of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath (C.B.) on 21 December, 1894.[3]

He assumed command of the destroyer Crescent in March 1895.[4]

He was appointed in command of the battleship Mars on 5 January, 1898.[5]

For his services in China Powell was appointed an Ordinary Member of the Second Class, or Knight Commander, in the Most Distinguished Order of Saint Michael and Saint George (K.C.M.G.) on 26 June, 1902.[6]

Powell was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 1 January, 1903.[7]

Powell was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on 8 February, 1907, vice Bruce.[8] In accordance with the provisions of the Order in Council of 8 December, 1903, he was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 13 February.[9] He was advanced to the rank of Admiral on the Retired List on 12 April, 1911.[10]
