Admiral Evelyn Robert Le Marchant, D.S.O., Royal Navy, Retired (25 January, 1858 – 11 February, 1949) was an officer of the Royal Navy.

Early Life & Career

In July, 1871, Le Marchant was ranked thirty-second in order of merit of thirty-five candidates accepted as Naval Cadets following the entrance examinations.[1]

Le Marchant was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 June, 1882.[2]

Le Marchant was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1896.[3]

Le Marchant was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1902.[4]

In January 1905, he assumed command of the first class protected cruiser Argonaut.[5] He was not to remain there long, however, as on 15 March, he was appointed in command of the second class battleship Nile.[6]

Le Marchant was appointed in command of the armoured cruiser Hogue on 20 December, 1906.[7]

Le Marchant was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral dated 19 December, 1912, vice Purey-Cust.[8] In accordance with the provisions of the Order in Council of 8 December, 1903, he was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 14 January, 1913.[9]

Great War

On 22 December, le Marchant was appointed to M.F.A. Ilex for service at Kingstown, with his flag flown on shore. He was reappointed to the same position on 1 July, born on the books of M.F.A. Boadicea II.[10][11] On 22 December he was appointed to Egmont,[12] as Rear-Admiral of Patrols, Malta.[13]

He was appointed a companion of the Distinguished Service Order on 1 January, 1918.[14] He was invested with the honour on 4 May at Buckingham Palace.[15]

Retirement

Le Marchant was advanced to the rank of Vice-Admiral on the Retired List on 23 October, 1917,[16] and to Admiral on the Retired List on 16 May, 1921.[17]
