Captain (retired) Ernest Leslie Cardale (16 September, 1879 – ) was an officer in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Born in Stoke, Devon the son of Admiral Charles Searle Cardale.[1]

On 3 August, 1898, he was ordered home from service in the Pacific aboard the armoured cruiser Imperieuse to take up an appointment to the Training Squadron, arriving in England on 15 October. He served in the screw frigate Raleigh from 5 November, 1898 until 15 September, 1899.[2]

Appointed to the Vindictive in the Mediterranean on 4 July, 1900, Cardale was re-appointed to the ship, additional upon his promotion to the rank of Lieutenant on 31 December, 1901.[3]

Cardale was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 31 December, 1909.[4]

On 23 September 1912, he was admitted to Plymouth Hospital to be treated for an inguinal hernia on the right side. He was declared fit on 14 December.[5]

Great War

Cardale was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1915.[6]

Cardale married Katherine Gwen Mudge on 14 July, 1915 at Plympton St. Mary, in Devon.

Cardale was tried by a Court Martial on 22 February, 1917 for stranding Crusader and was acquitted. On 19 May, 1917 there was a collision between Nugent and Myngs, resulting in Cardale being relieved in command of Nugent in June and being unemployed for about a month until his appointment in command of the comparatively modest Beagle Class destroyer H.M.S. Harpy on 12 July, 1917. Misfortune of some kind not very legible visited him again in 1917, when there was another Court Martial in Blenheim on a charge of "negligently hazarding" Harpy and another ship by default. It appears that this charge was proved. On the strength of favorable reports from Captain Withers ("Good commander of a T.B.D. division") and Sparks ("sorry to lose him, etc"), Cardale stayed in Harpy until being appointed in command of Rival on 5 November, 1918.[7]

Post-War

Cardale remained in command of Rival through the end of the war and as the fleet was transitioning to a smaller post-war incarnation. As was so often the case, he found himself in command of several unnamed destroyers being reduced to reserve in early 1919.

Cardale transition to command of Scout on 13 November, 1919 (or Taurus, according to the Navy Lists) as he continued his oversight of the destroyers passing into reserve.[8]

Cardale was placed on the Retired List with the rank of Captain on 3 May, 1925.[9]
