Captain (retired) Edward Stafford Houseman, R.N. (7 December, 1870 – 23 June, 1927) served in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

His father, H. Houseman, Esq. lived in Hyde Park London when Edward joined the Royal Navy with the January 1884 intake term at H.M.S. Britannia.

His early naval service placed him in Bellerophon on the North American Station for much of 1886, then to Canada for a year plying the same area. From January to August 1890, he served in the turret ship Dreadnought in the Mediterranean.

On 25 January 1892, he found himself admitted to Haslar Hospital, to be treated for syphilis II. He was discharged to the gunnery training school Excellent on 5 March.

Houseman was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 November, 1892.

Houseman was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1904.

Houseman underwent an extended series of hospitalisations in 1905, suffering from ague. On 22 November, 1906 he was admitted to Yarmouth Hospital with the notation, "Insane". He was placed on the Retired List as unfit on 26 December, 1907.

Houseman was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1919. He died in Yarmouth Hospital of pneumonia and cardiac failure, aged 56.
