Admiral Edward Ratcliffe Garth Russell Evans, First Baron Mountevans of Chelsea, C.B., (28 October, 1881 – 20 August, 1957) was an officer in the Royal Navy.

He added the name Russell in late 1904 for family reasons.[1]

Life & Career

He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 31 December, 1902.[2]

Evans was awarded 1908's Shadwell Testimonial for some feat of chart-making that remains to be discovered, though he may have been in Spain at the time.[3]

Evans was specially promoted to the rank of Commander on 1 July, 1912 for services in the Antarctic.[4]

On 30 July, 1914, Evans was appointed in command of the destroyer Mohawk.[5]

On the night of 20-21 April, 1917, he commanded the flotilla leader Broke during the Second Battle of Dover Strait when that ship rammed a German destroyer and was torpedoed but remained afloat.[6] Evans was promoted to the rank of Captain on 21 April, 1917 – the day following this action. In May, Evans was lent for a week to ten days duty with American destroyers, but he returned to Broke and served in her until 25 October, 1917.[7]

Evans was appointed in command of the scout cruiser Active in April, 1918.[8]

Post-War

Evans was appointed to Attentive III as Senior Naval Officer, Ostend. He remained there until the base closed on 7 October, 1919.[9]

Evans was appointed in command of light cruiser Carlisle on 15 December, 1920,[10] and personally assisted in the rescue of survivors from a wrecked passenger ship off south China in 1921.[Citation needed] He was next appointed to command of Harebell as Captain of A/P, which might mean Antisubmarine Patrol?[11]

He was appointed command of the battlecruiser Repulse in June 1926.

Evans was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 24 February, 1928.[12]

Evans was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on 1 November, 1932.[13]

Evans was promoted to the rank of Admiral on 12 July, 1936.[14]
