Rear-Admiral (retired) Edward Grey Hulton (4 August, 1845 – 19 January, 1923) was an officer in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Hulton was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 7 March, 1867.
In 1874, Hulton was awarded the Royal Humane Society's Bronze Medal.[1]
Hulton was promoted to the rank of Commander on 15 May, 1876.
Hulton was mentioned in despatches for commanding a small party in disguise sent to destroy a rail line and trains at the occupation of Suez[?] 2 August, 1882.
Hulton was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1885.
Hulton was appointed in command of the second class protected cruiser Amphion on 11 December, 1888.[2] He was severely reprimanded in a Court Martial convened three days after he grounded her on 16 November 1889.
Hulton was again Court Martialed on 1 August 1892 for hazarding Forth during the Annual Manoeuvres of 1892.[3] Hulton received a reprimand on this occasion. An estimation from Sir A. Hoskins and Lord Spencer was provided which read, "notwithstanding the many fine qualities he possesses as an officer in command, he should not be again entrusted with one of H.M.S. ships."
Hulton was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 14 December, 1895 and was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral (retired) on 1 August, 1899.
