Great War
Though he had been in command of series of torpedo boats and destroyers since 1910, de la Poer was appointed to the battleship Monarch on 19 January, 1914 immediately after being evaluated as "too casual ability to handle ship. Shd do better on larger ship.". On 9 June, 1914, Lieutenant-Commander de la Poer married Marguerite Kathleen Gerard Walmesley at Brompton Oratory.[3]
De la Poer's time in Monarch finally ended when he was appointed additional to President on 31 November, 1917 "for S.C.S. 7" and for command of the convoy sloop Chrysanthemum on commissioning, which appears to have happened at the end of the year.[4]
Post-War
De la Poer was relieved in command of Chrysanthemum on 4 October, 1919 and appointed to Hermione, additional, for command of minesweepers.[5]
De la Poer was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 1 May, 1924 with the rank of Commander.[6]
In 1936, he changed his name by Deed Poll to Edmund Alain Tremeur de Poher Monsell.[7]
In August 1939, Commander Monsell rejoined the Royal Navy and was appointed to flagship at Chatham Pembroke for "NCS Duties Thames". On 4 November, 1940 he was appointed as N.C.S.O. Londonderry. On 18 May, 1943 he was appointed to the Pembroke again as additional for "N.T.J.", beginning these duties on 1 June, 1943. A further appointment to the Mentor for duties as R.N.O. Stornoway was cancelled on 24 July. Monsell returned to the Retired List on 1 September, 1943, having been discharged on 24 August.[8]
