Rear-Admiral (retired) Edmond Julius Gordon Mackinnon, D.S.O., R.N. (11 April, 1880 – 17 September, 1940) was an officer in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Mackinnon was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 26 June, 1902.[1]

Mackinnon was appointed Lieutenant & Commander of the destroyer Bittern on 6 November, 1906.[2] He married Katherine Ethel Rothwell on 3 April, 1907.[3]

Mackinnon was appointed in command of the destroyer Roebuck on 17 June, 1909.[4]

On 19 October, 1909, he was appointed Lieutenant & Commander of the destroyer Arun.[5]

Mackinnon was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 26 June, 1910.[6]

He was appointed in command of the destroyer Ribble on 7 September, 1911.[7]

On 11 March, 1914, Mackinnon was appointed in command of the destroyer Druid.[8]

Great War

Mackinnon was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1915.[9]

He was appointed in command of the destroyer Walker on 5 January, 1918.[10]

Post-War

On 9 January, 1920, Mackinnon was appointed in command of the submarine Shakespeare.[11]

Mackinnon was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1921.[12]

Mackinnon was appointed to Montrose, additional, on 15 September, 1924 and then in command upon her commissioning on 1 October, becoming then Captain (D) of the Fourth Destroyer Flotilla. He retained command of 4 D.F. when he was appointed in command of Broke on 10 February, 1925.[13]

In February, 1932, Mackinnon issued an adverse report on his executive officer, Commander F. R. Baxter in Hermes in which he criticised Baxter's social grace and excessive self-regard. Mackinnon was informed that Their Lordships did not concur. Mackinnon was invalided from the China Station that year with diphtheria. He was admitted to Chatham hospital in July.[14]

Mackinnon was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 21 January, 1933 and placed on the Retired List the following day in accordance with Order in Council of 9 March, 1914.[15]

World War II

Mackinnon was presumed killed in action on the night of 17-18 September, 1940 while serving as a Commodore, Second Class in the London Convoy Pool when the City of Benares was torpedoed by U-48.[16]
