Admiral Douglas Lionel Dent, C.B., C.M.G., Royal Navy, Retired (7 August, 1869 – 11 July, 1959) was an officer of the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Dent was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1901.[1]

Captain

On 30 June, 1908, Dent was promoted to the rank of Captain.[2]

He was appointed to Blenheim, in command, on 31 March, 1910.[Citation needed]

On 1 May, 1912, he was appointed Captain Superintendent of Destroyers Building by Contract.[3]

Great War

He was appointed an Additional Member of the Third Class, or Companion, of the Most Distinguished Order of Saint Michael and Saint George (C.M.G.) on 1 January, 1916.[4]

He took command of the battleship Irresistible in January of 1915,[5] but saw her sink from under his feet in March.

He was appointed to command the battleship Prince of Wales on 8 June, 1916.[6]

Post-War

He was appointed an Additional Member of the Third Class, or Companion, in the Military Division of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath (C.B.) on 1 January, 1919.[7]

Dent was appointed Director of Naval Equipment in succession to Rear-Admiral Edward F. Bruen, dated 2 May, 1922.[8]

He was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 3 August, 1919, vice Tancred.[9] He was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on 1 January, 1925.[10] He was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 6 August, 1926,[11] and was advanced to the rank of Admiral on the Retired List on 27 February, 1929.[12]
