Thynne was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 September, 1898.[2]

In December 1907, Mermaid and Express collided at night and Thynne was castigated for allowing the ships to converge, unlit, on a rendezvous at such a high speed.[3]

Thynne was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1910.[4]

On 23 December, 1911 Thynne appointed commander in the heavy cruiser Kent.[5]

Thynne was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1916 and on 7 January, 1917, he was superseded in the battleship and in March was appointed in command of the minelayer Wahine.[7]

On 13 January, 1920, Thynne was appointed in command of the depot ship Woolwich in Devonport, recommissioning her there on the 3rd of February and becoming Captain (D) of a flotilla.[9]

Thynne was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 3 July, 1922.
