Rear-Admiral (retired) Cuthbert Godfrey Chapman, M.V.O. (29 August, 1862 — 17 March, 1931) was an officer of the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Born in Buckingham. Chapman was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 1 April, 1886.[1]
His service record(ADM 196/42) and the Navy Lists disagree on the order in which he commanded Gleaner and Hussar in 1896-1998. We've chosen to trust the Service Record.
Chapman was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1898.[2]
Chapman was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1904.[3]
In January 1907, he assumed command of the second class protected cruiser Venus. He remained in her until August 1908.
He was appointed to command the armoured cruiser Devonshire on 19 March, 1909.[4]
He was appointed as captain of the battleship Venerable on 18 July, 1911.[5]
He was made captain of Hindustan on 14 May of 1912, retaining that post for a year and five days.[6]
Chapman retired on 7 July, 1914. He was advanced to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 3 June, 1916.[7]
He succumbed to cerebral apoplexy on 17 March, 1931, widowing Mrs. Dorothy Beatrix Chapman.[8]
