Admiral Charles William Keighly-Peach, D.S.O., Royal Navy, Retired (23 September, 1865 – 27 November, 1943) was an officer of the Royal Navy.

Early Life & Career

On 30 October, 1888, Keighly-Peach was appointed to the gunboat H.M.S. Pheasant.[1] Commander Alfred L. Winsloe brought the young Lieutenant to notice in April 1889 for his services in the blockade of the Opobo River on the Nigerian coast. On 3 August, Keighly-Peach distinguished himself by assumed the duties of commanding officer in Pheasant upon the death of her Lieutenant Commanding, while at the same time doing without the services of an engineer.[2]

Keighly-Peach was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1900.[3]

He was appointed as commander of Hogue on 3 May, 1906 and received an unsatisfactory inspection that same month by Admiral Beaumont, citing a "lack of zeal on part of officers." A little more time in the ship seems to have permitted improvement, as Admiral Bosanquet and Rear-Admiral Inglefield offered "satisfactory" and "creditable" inspections in the succeeding 10 months time.[4]

To date 27 January, 1908, Keighly-Peach was appointed to H.M.S. President for Gunnery and Torpedo Courses.[5] He was appointed in temporary command of Leviathan on 15 March, 1909.[6]

On 23 March, 1910 Keighly-Peach served as President of a Court-Martial held at Chatham to try Commander James William Guy Innes "who was charged with having by negligence, or by default, stranded the ocean going destroyer Saracen, of the First Destroyer Flotilla, on the South Shoeburyness Sands on March 7". The Court found that Innes did by default strand the ship, and adjudged him to be severely reprimanded. He was acquitted of stranding the ship by negligence.[7] He was re-appointed to command the armoured cruiser Hogue on recommissioning, dated 12 October, 1910.[8]

He was appointed to command the battleship Hindustan on 13 August, 1917.[9]

Retirement

Keighly-Peach was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 1 October, 1918 and placed on the Retired List as from 2 October, 1918.[10] He was appointed a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.) on 1 January, 1919.[11] On 19 July, 1924 he was promoted Vice-Admiral on the Retired List.[12] He was advanced to Admiral on the Retired List on 22 February, 1928.[13]
